The Lamèque Wind Power Project is situated on Lamèque Island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence at the northeastern tip of Gloucester County, New Brunswick. It is ACCIONA's first wind farm in New Brunswick and is estimated to generate enough zero-emission electricity to power approximately 8,000 homes.
New Brunswick Power is the designated off-taker of the power, via a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. The project has received support from the Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program, with an investment of up to 13.79 million dollars over ten years.
The Lamèque Wind Power Project provides jobs and increased revenues for New Brunswick through investments in local infrastructure, lease agreements with local landowners and property tax revenues from the project over its lifetime. During construction the project created hundreds of jobs and will employ 5-7 full time workers.
Harnessing a plentiful domestic energy resource like wind to generate electricity provides North America with sustainable and clean-energy choices beyond conventional energy sources and carbon-emitting coal. The clean energy produced by Lamèque is projected to offset nearly 116,000 tons of CO2 annually.
"Ensuring that we have the right balance of renewables as a part of our energy portfolio is essential. Our partnership with ACCIONA Energy plays an important role in further diversifying our generation mix to include more renewable energy. It assists us in achieving our renewable targets, contributes to lower emissions and supports our vision of sustainability – meeting the needs of today while ensuring tomorrow." - Gaetan Thomas, President and CEO, NB Power
