Bridge Over Clarence River at Harwood

ACCIONA Infrastructure as part of Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture (AFJV), has been engaged to design and build the new bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood, located on the Pacific Highway, in New South Wales.

Location: Harwood, NSW, Australia

Our role: Design and construct

Infrastructure: Design and construction of 1.5km single deck bridge

Project value: Part of the overall AU$4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade

Estimated completion date: End 2019

Construction of the new bridge involves:

  • Design and construction of a new 1.52 kilometre bridge over the Clarence River, about 30  meters downstream from the existing bridge. The length of the bridge over the Clarence River will span 620 meters, with a vertical clearance above the river of at least 30 metres for marine traffic to pass.
  • The new bridge will be a dual carriageway bridge, with two lanes in each direction.
  • There will be local road works at the northern and southern abutments.
  • AFJV is working with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to develop and implement innovative and efficient design solutions which will reduce the overall construction and operations budget.

The project is part of the larger AU $4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

Once complete, the upgrade will improve road safety, reduce travel times and increase transport efficiency.

Having executed the construction contract in July 2016, early works including detailed design, geotechnical investigations and flood modelling have started on the bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood.
