    Ripley Wind Farm

The Ripley Wind Power Project is ACCIONA's first wind farm in Ontario and is estimated to generate enough zero-emission electricity to power 24,000 homes.

Ripley, on the eastern shores of Lake Huron near Huron-Kinloss Township, approximately 220 km west of Toronto and 140 km north of London, Ontario
    Completion date
    November 2007
    Wind power
76 MW capacity, utilizing 2 MW Enercon turbines
    Projected CO2 emissions avoided
    Approximately 72,000 tons annually

One of the six imperial lighthouses constructed by contractor John Brown, the first warning beam shone from Point Clark’s lantern on April 1, 1859.

    Power generation

The Ripley Wind Power Project’s 38 wind turbines send electricity to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator. The electricity is purchased by the Ontario Power Authority and sold as green power. The power purchase agreement is anticipated to be 20 years in length.

    Economic development

According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, it is estimated that wind energy creates 27 percent more jobs than coal electric and 66 percent more than natural gas electric per unit of energy. Wind farms invigorate rural Canada, and the Ripley Wind Power Project is no exception. The Ripley Wind Power Project provides jobs and increased revenues for Ontario through investments in local infrastructure, lease agreements with local landowners and property tax revenues from the project over its lifetime.

    How this project is sustainable

Harnessing a plentiful domestic energy resource like wind to generate electricity provides North America with sustainable and clean-energy choices beyond conventional energy sources and carbon-emitting coal. The clean energy produced by Ripley is projected to offset over 72,000 tons of CO2 annually.

    What people are saying

“Adding clean, affordable and sustainable electricity capacity is a top priority for our government. That’s why we have set a goal of doubling Ontario’s renewable-energy supply to 15,700 megawatts by 2025. The Ripley wind farm, at 76 megawatts, is an important and welcome addition.” —Gerry Phillip, Minister of Energy and Member of Provincial Parliament Scarborough - Agincourt
